FIXER Let's face it-- the boys in Fixer live in a different world. Their world isn't always pretty, ranging from the gutter to the stage with a few stops in between, but it is certainly loud, raucous, sexy, and a hell of a lot of fun. Assuming that healthy living is overrated, Fixer eat, sleep, drink and live the rock and roll lifestyle. It suits them just fine.
Appropriately, Fixer's music reflects this worldview. It will hit you like an anvil dropped out of a window, yet it is laced with the kind of subtleties too often missing in the realm of hard rock. These very subtleties are exactly what separate the good from the great, and Fixer lands squarely in the latter category. See them live and you'll be converted-- the enthusiasm and ramshackle charm with which they bound around the stage never seems to impede their always tight-yet-supple performances, and you never know what direction things will take. These boys know their craft, and shit, man-- they have it down.
Why they're still playing the clubs is anyone's guess. Perhaps it's because they're not exactly garage rock, pop-punk, or nu-metal, so the record companies haven't figured them out yet. Maybe the band's fuck-all attitude has pissed off someone important. Who knows. What is clear is that they are good old kick-ass rock, a fresh and modern addition to a venerable tradition that includes such titans as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses, and Fixer's all-time favorites, the mighty Led Zeppelin. Them's fightin' words, I know, but Fixer's always ready for a good fight, so fuck it. Let the music speak for itself.
Fixer's latest effort, All the Pleasure That You Crave, captures the band's essence like none of their self-released EPs have yet: Evan R. Saffer's vocal wail aimed at the heavens, pushing St. Peter aside and pummeling on those pearly gates; stunning guitar-work by Wilson Lihn that careens in every direction, sounding not only incendiary but ablaze with hellfire; a relentless rhythm section, courtesy of J Brown and Tim Newton, on bass and drums, respectively, that holds everything together with an atomic stomp. Or, in less flowery terms-- this shit rocks. The songs are expertly crafted and deftly performed, with lyrics that deal with desperation, bitterness tinged with hope, and a healthy rock and roll dose of booze, sex, life on the road, and the joys of being insane.
The boys have garnered accolades steadily for the past couple of years, winning several battles of the bands (including the Sam Ash Future Rock Stars competition, for which they walked away with $15,000 worth of equipment) and continually generating glowing press and radio airplay, both in the US and abroad. Based in New York City, they have been constantly touring the region from DC to Boston with all stops in between (as well as a jaunt to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland), and have been building a strong following in every area. Right now, however, they are focused on the future: not of the setting-up-a-401k variety, of course, but of continuing their ascent to the top of the rock and roll heap. Guitarist Wilson Lihn's bio page on the Fixer website addresses their aspirations quite clearly-- world domination. Masses, take heed. Welcome to the world of rock.
